Manufacturers of power transmission and distribution (T&D) equipment face rigorous compliance demands when entering the North American market. Whether producing standardized equipment for industrial installations or custom systems for utility infrastructure, demonstrating conformity to applicable product safety standards is essential.
At Intertek, we specialize in certifying Power Transmission and Distribution Equipment (TDE) including switchgear, control panels, fault interrupters, and transformers, we offer end-to-end testing, inspection, and certification services tailored to the needs of equipment manufacturers, design engineers, and compliance teams.
As a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) accredited by OSHA in the U.S. and SCC in Canada, Intertek delivers ETL certification programs that provide recognized proof of product compliance. The ETL Listed Mark signals to Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), utilities, and industrial clients that your equipment has been independently evaluated for safety, and continued conformity.
Certification types:
| Mark | Certification Type | Typical Use Case | Common Equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
![]() |
ETL Listed | Standardized, mass-produced switchgear panels | LV/MV switchgear, MCCs |

ETL Field Label | Custom-built, site-specific transformer systems | GIS, RMUs, retrofit panels, retrofit equipment |
![]() |
ETL Limited Production Certification (LPC) | Short-run equipment builds | Mobile substations, pilot systems |
The ETL Listed Mark shows that your product has been tested by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), that it has met the essential requirements of widely accepted product safety standards, and that manufacturers have agreed to periodic inspections to verify continued compliance and can sell products to the North American market.
In some cases, ETL Field Labeling allows for an on‐site product compliance evaluation. A variety of circumstances may prompt a field label need. This method of demonstrating compliance is used for one‐of‐a‐kind, custom equipment or prototype equipment that is not intended to be mass produced and may have left the manufacturer’s facility without being Certified.
Similarly, ETL Limited Production Certification (LPC Label) applies when one or only a few pieces of the equipment are manufactured or produced. The evaluation is performed at your production location and includes an inspection of the equipment, the components used, the markings, and the associated drawings, and the test records.
