Creating a safer, more inclusive learning environment

Teams from Intertek’s various business lines in Ghana came together to complete a transformative renovation and resourcing project at a school for visually impaired children.
Akropong School for the Blind was established 80 years ago with the mission of fostering independence and enhancing the quality of life. The school, which serves nearly 400 children ranging from kindergarten to junior high, has faced challenges with maintaining essential infrastructure and accessing adequate specialised learning materials.
Through the collective efforts of the Intertek Ghana team, support was directed towards enhancing both the safety and the learning experience. Focus was placed on renovating and repainting the primary school classrooms and administration block to create a brighter more engaging space for teaching and learning. In addition, walkways that are vital for students who rely heavily on safe and structured paths were renovated to improve mobility, confidence and accessibility across the campus.
To strengthen the school’s teaching capacity, the team also provided braille learning materials for the primary school teachers, along with educational supplies for the students. These resources aim to complement classroom instruction and help address the ongoing shortage of braille-adapted materials.
Over the years, the Akropong school has become a beacon of hope and empowerment within the community, inspiring the future hopes and aspirations of its students. This initiative enables the school to continue its important work with renewed energy and increased impact.
