A critical part of our minerals testing process is the drying of samples before analysis. At our state-of-the-art Intertek Minerals Global Centre of Excellence in Perth, Western Australia, this job is carried out in 19 gas powered ovens, which we upgraded in 2025 to reduce costs and emissions.

To improve temperature control, we installed thermocouples in the ovens. Thermocouples provide a more stable reading of temperature, preventing the ovens from becoming excessively hot, allowing us to maintain an optimal testing environment and reducing the amount of gas used. Since we made the improvements, our onsite team estimates that the ovens have become 8-10% more energy efficient.

The Global Centre of Excellence in Perth was established to inspire innovation and sustainability across the minerals supply chain, and this initiative reflects Intertek’s commitment to both in our own operations. To extend the positive impact, we are looking at the potential to install thermocouples in the ovens at our other minerals sites around the world.
